A reply to Tom's letter.

Tom,
It is good to see that you are voicing your opinion in this conversation.  I do respect your opinion, but also to rebuttal your points.

You wrote: I wouldn't worry too much about the government over there...They aren't out killing their own people.
You may not remember or deliberately trying to forget, but here are the three events of crimes they have committed, in that they have slaughtered millions of people.

1. In 1952-1958, they have killed 7.7 millions or so people under the name of Collected Farming or "Cải Cách Ruộng Đất" in North VN. 2. 1968 they have buried alive 6 thousand or more people when they got pushed out of Huế.
3. After the war 1975, millions people have left VN for other countries in droves by all means of getting out.  During that time, the Communists really trying to stop people from leaving the country to save face.  So they find all means to kill the people escaping from VN.  Remember Lê Duẫn said: The escapees are traitors, they deserved to die. Đỗ Mười said: Those left VN wanted to eat the left over from the US, they should be shot.  Nguyễn Trọng Nhân during the interview in 1993 in Amsterdam, Holland said: "Those whose migrating out of VN deserved to get their heads chopped"  or  Những người di tản đáng bị chặt đầu” (his own words.)

You wrote: Even the US, claiming to hold the highest level of democracy, has made plenty of unjust arrests (Civil right movements) , even killings (Waco, Texas).

Yes, you are correct. No government is perfect and no, there is no such thing as utopia government, but if I have to choose, I would not choose Communism for a government.  I would rather die than living under communist regime.  Well, not just me alone, the world have proved to you that there are millions upon millions have risked their lives escaped from Communists countries such as Poland, East Germany, Russia just to name a few.
Just curious, as to why you brought the US into the conversation, when we are talking about the Vietnamese Government.

You wrote: I see the anti-government vents every day on TV man. I saw this guy on tv the other day criticizing the Vietnam government in giving up some disputed territory to China. Common sense tells me that a government wouldn't give up its land for no reason! And this guy, instead of protesting against Chinese's action, is pointing fingers at his fellowmen. It seems silly.

Where did you see this guy on TV criticizing the VN government?  Is this guy in the US?  I am assuming so because if he was in VN he would not have the FREEDOM to go around criticizing the VN government or the Chinese.  The Communists VN would have put him in prison as they have done to Lê Thị Công Nhân, Cù Huy Hà Vũ, Pham Thị Nghiên, Điếu Cày, the list goes on.....

You have failed to see the letter from The communists VN Pham Văn Đồng to China in 1958.  I can send it to you or you can look it up on the net. "Công Hàm Bán Nước của Phạm Văn Đồng". In the letter, Phạm Văn Đồng, at the time, Vice Prime Minister of VN agreed with the map, China had drawn out, including the Parecels and Spratly Islands as known as Hoàng Sa và Trường Sa.  But those islands (land) belong to VN for thousands of years.  How could some one agreed to give up their own land to some one else? There are more land the communists VN have given to the China. Which let's talk start an other topic.

You wrote: instead of protesting against Chinese's action, is pointing fingers at his fellowmen. It seems silly.

If you think pointing fingers at his fellowmen is silly, than do you think putting people in prison for protesting against Chinese's action is more silly?  The communists have imprisoned many people for protesting the Chinese for invading VN and killing many fishermen fishing near Hoàng Sa and Trường Sa.  Many people only hold signs that says, Hoàng Sa Trường Sa la của VN and theCommunists arrested them for protesting against the Chinese.  Among the people got arrested is Pham Thi Nghien (she hung the sign on her own property, not public place or even interfering with traffic).

You wrote: If i could help, I would love to teach CS there or set up organizations to promote healthy lifestyles. That, i think, will be more constructive than the government-bashing approach. After all, government's made up of its own people, when people change, government will change.

The communists government has never been voted by the people in VN.  If the people have a choice of picking a type of government, The communists VN have already been rid off, as other communists countries in the Soviet Blocs.  Do you remember them, the Soviet Union?

There were a few had had brought back to Việt Nam millions of dollars trying to "teach" the communists and lost every thing, but luckily to escaped VN alive again.  Among them was a guy name Bình from Holland and an other was a guy from Southern CA, his name was Trường. You can look them up on the net for more information. And now you want to teach the Communist "Healthy lifestyles"?  Actually they don't even need you to do that, they have already know how to live very healthily, among the 3 millions communist comrades in VN, they have more money than 80 other millions VNamese combined.   They are eating the best food, driving the best cars, their homes are the biggest, so I think they are living a healthy lifestyles already.
They are still claiming that they are Communists, they are not capitalists, and according to Communists Manifesto, every one should be equal in term of wealth, but they have more wealthy than many wealthy capitalists.  They send their children to capitalist countries to  school and find ways to stay, but they claimed that if they follow Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Ho's ideologies would eventually take us to Communists Utopia, yet look at where they send their children?

This saying:  Đừng nghe những gì Cộng Sản nói, mà hãy nhìn kỹ những gì Cộng Sản làm.
You know there are 10 commandments from God.  I have added this saying to it and I called it the 11th commandment.  I may not practice the first 10 commandments well, but the 11th, I don't even have to try.

Just one question for you,
Do you know the reasons why you and I became a refugee or người tỵ nạn and do you know whom we have risked our lives to get away from rather having to live with them??

Regards,

Nguyễn Tỵ Nạn.
